If the change is recent, one-sided, or follows an injection

Do not book a cosmetic consultation first. A change in one eye only, a change that appeared over weeks rather than years, a lump that can be felt and is growing, an eye that bulges forward, double vision or any change in vision needs medical assessment. If you have had an injection in this area and develop severe pain that does not settle, skin that turns pale, mottled, dusky or blistered, or any change in vision, seek emergency care immediately and say what was injected and when.

Arranging an ordinary assessment

Where the hollow has been present for years and is broadly the same on both sides, appointments are made through the hospital outpatient line or through the appointment service described on the appointments page. Say that you are asking about the under-eye area so that the right clinic time is booked. If you are travelling from outside Chongqing, say so when you book, because the assessment and any pre-treatment tests can sometimes be arranged across fewer visits.

What to bring

Bring a list of your current medicines and allergies, the names of any conditions you are being treated for, and any previous treatment records for this area, including what was injected, where and when, because the timing changes how the tissue behaves and how it is assessed. If you have had filler here before, say so even if it was years ago. Old photographs of your face are more useful than you would expect, because they show whether this is recent or has always been there.

What happens at the consultation

Expect an examination rather than a presentation. The area is looked at in ordinary light and in light from above; the cheek is lifted while the groove is watched; what lies under the skin is felt; and the position and tone of the lower lid are recorded, including how much of the white shows below the iris and whether the lid springs back when drawn gently downward. You should leave knowing which problem you have, whether it should be treated at all, and what the options and their limits are.
